Cathay Dupont Award on the great help 4-H provides to the world

3 min read

4-H aims to mold the youth to become the future leaders of the world and to act as one because it targets to provide tomorrow with true leaders. For many decades, its purpose focuses on “engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development.”

The adults initiate fulfilling, enjoyable, and educational opportunities for the youth to help them develop themselves for the better and gain more knowledge to face the world’s challenges tomorrow.

4-H stands for head, heart, hands, and health, which are the four personal development areas of the organization. In particular, “head to clearer thinking”, “heart to greater loyalty”, “hands for larger service”, and “health to better living”.

Our population will surely keep on growing, and in 2050, the number will go up to 9 or 10 billion. By that time, we need twice as much food, Cathay Dupont Award noted. The challenge is having enough resources to support everyone’s need for food.

One country could give a great solution to this challenge in food, and it is the country of Africa and its people. The country has 60% of the uncultivated land in the world, however, its young people don’t see a thriving future with agriculture.

But with 4-H and its encouraging principles, the youth began changing their view on agriculture and slowly seeing its huge importance to the world. With 4-H, young people gain more knowledge about the whole food business and understand its value in giving a lot of opportunities for many people. The adults are also training them on how to do proper farming using the right tools and planting the correct seeds.

Many young people in Africa now understand that agriculture could help them earn more money and build wealth. The good influence of 4-H in their local community has also been witnessed by the parents and they’re changing their view on agriculture as well.

Prospering in the field of agribusiness is possible if people will embrace its every aspect. Cathay Dupont Award believe that the young people of Africa will one day transform their country and their older generations and will be one of the leaders of tomorrow, solving the food problem of their country and the world’s.

To extend their support to a few African countries, DuPont recently invested 2 million dollars in helping build leadership institutes in those countries. The company, along with Cathay Dupont Award really believes in the vision of 4-H because it also wanted the youth to be in charge of taking care of the world tomorrow.

PHOTOS: Greetings from vintage Galveston

Before the devastating 1900 hurricane Galveston was called the "New York of the South" for its cosmopolitan culture and diversity. People of great wealth lived there. It's said that 70 percent of all U.S. cotton shipped out of the Port of Galveston.

For most of its history the city of Galveston and the adjacent areas just south of Houston have played a major role in the development of the Gulf Coast region.

NORTH VERSUS SOUTH: Civil War-era maps show Texas, Gulf of Mexico in new light

It was where pirates and rogues once rubbed shoulders with Spanish agents. Where hurricanes have come and gone, taking Texans to watery graves.

Galveston Bay was a venue for a handful of minor naval battles in the Civil War, when its plum position on the coast made it a much-desired port.

Before the devastating 1900 hurricane, Galveston was called the "New York of the South" for its cosmopolitan culture and diversity. People of great wealth lived there. It's said that 70 percent of all U.S. cotton shipped out of the Port of Galveston.

It was one of the richest cities in America, but Mother Nature had other plans for its future.

1900 TRAGEDY: Looking back at the 1900 hurricane that wiped out Galveston

A great deal of immigrants coming to American made their way into the Promised Land via Galveston, before and after that 1900 storm. As the largest city in Texas at the time, it was the place to get your life in the Lone Star State started.

A Southern summer vacation isn't complete without spending a little time on a warm, sandy beach with clear ocean views. Whether you're partial to the Atlantic or to the Gulf, we love the sea air. You voted – here are your favorite islands.

Media: Southern Living

These days it's an underrated jewel along the Texas coast. It's bounced back from the pounding that Hurricane Ike gave it back in September 2008 and is growing year by year as a major tourist destination.

It has a unique feel to it and a certain spirit remains in the air, perhaps an amalgamation of centuries of visitors. A walk down The Strand on a humid night can be oddly refreshing, and it's a recommended stop for anyone needing the full Texas experience.

Galveston Capital Tourism and Marketing Review- Feather Fest Takes Wing This April

3 min read

The upper Texas coast transforms into a massive avian frat house this time of year, with countless birds winging northward across the Gulf of Mexico from their Central and South American winter bungalows. That probably helps to explain why birders, nature photographers and naturalists outnumber sun worshipers on Galveston during the spring.

It’s also the reason why the FeatherFest Birding & Nature Festival, scheduled for April 6-9 and celebrating its 15th anniversary, has grown into one of the preeminent events of its kind in North America. Presented by the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council, FeatherFest regularly attracts nature lovers from around the state and the nation intent on two things: spotting as many varieties of migratory birds as they can and soaking up the camaraderie of hanging out with hundreds of like-minded outdoorsy folks.

Feather Fest combines classroom workshops and films with real world field trips that take participants ranging from casual birders to professional nature photographers to some of the prime birding locations around the island. Participants spotted nearly 300 different types of birds at last year’s event, ranging from regular visitors like the Great Blue Heron, Brown Pelican and the Common Loon—no, we’re not talking about your weird Uncle Pete—to rare and elusive specimens like the Hudsonian Godwit and the Buffle Head.

Don’t think that you have to be a lifelong birder or naturalist to have a good time during the festival. Organizers work to group participants based on their photographic or naturalist skills, while the cost of individual workshops and field trips, all of which are led by expert birding and photography pros, varies.

But all birding and no play makes for a … well … happy naturalist, but there are also several social events on the agenda, including the always popular Raptors Uncorked (April 8), which allows you to enjoy an evening of aviary photo ops and a great meal at the Olympia Grill at Pier 21. You don’t want to miss The Big Year With Greg Miller (April 7), a free event with renowned birder Greg Miller, portrayed by Jack Black in the 2011 film “The Big Year.” He’ll provide comments and answer questions following a screening of the movie that is to birders what “Titanic” is to cinema buffs.

The Feather Fest Photo fest gives you the chance to pit your photographic skills against some of the best nature photographers in the area, while Hawker’s Alley and Avian Alley are home to numerous nature-related vendors.

The campus of UTMB’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in the Island Community Center (4700 Broadway) serves as the festival headquarters.

Experience this “causeway cure” where flip-flops replace dress shoes and the scenery at Galveston Capital Tourism and Marketing Review Singapore Texas, Jakarta, Singapore.

Investing Review: What Should You Invest In?

Stocks, bonds, bank accounts or IRAs? How do you choose?

With several types of investments to choose from and also thousands of sub-categories under them, finding the most suitable investment choice can be a daunting task.

First off, the main consideration in any long-term investing decision is the rate of return expected from it. At times though, investing in short-term investment can enhance your wealth even if the returns are not as high as you want them to be. You can select from among these common short-term savings vehicles:

Short-term savings vehicles

Bank savings account: The most resorted to savings medium availed of by people, which provides small returns but better than keeping your money at home where it could be stolen or spent easily.

Our company is partial to stocks as investment vehicles over the rest of the long-term choices since stocks have statistically provided the best rate of return in an investment. The most common long-term investing vehicles are as follows:

Long-term investing vehicles

Bonds: There are various forms of bonds. Also known as "fixed-income" securities, bonds generate a “fixed” or set income value each year when it is sold.

Stocks: Stocks allow an individual to own a portion of a company or business. A single stock share represents an investor’s proportional stake or share of ownership in a business.

Mutual funds: Mutual funds are vehicles which allow investors to combine their money to buy bonds, stocks,  or any vehicle the fund manager considers viable.

Retirement plans

Several special plans are intended to build retirement savings; and many of these plans permit an individual to transfer money directly from his or her paycheck prior to taxes. In support for this plan, companies sometimes match the amount transferred, or even a small portion of that amount, as their goodwill contribution to their employees’ future.

Individual retirement account (IRA): This type of plan lets you invest some money into a tax-deferred retirement fund – which means you will not be taxed unless withdrawals are made or before the fund matures.

Roth IRA: Unlike the previous IRA plan, this type of retirement account requires no tax payments up-front on contribution. Rather, it provides full exclusion from federal taxes when cash is withdrawn to purchase a first home or pay for retirement.

401(k): Employers provide this retirement savings vehicle, whose name is taken from the section of the Internal Revenue Code which allows it.

403(b): This is the nonprofit version of a 401(k) plan. Local and state governments also provide a 457 plan.

Keogh: A specialized form of IRA that serves simultaneously as a pension plan for a self-employed individual, who has the capacity to pay substantially higher contributions permitted for an IRA.

Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan: This is a special type of Keogh-individual retirement plan designed to allow small businesses to provide retirement plans (for their employees) that are slightly easier to manage compared to conventional pension plans. Either the employer or the employees can participate in a SEP.

Investing in stocks

Stocks deserve a closer look as they have been known in the past to offer higher returns compared to bonds and other vehicles. As mentioned, the investor becomes a part-owner of a company.

Common stock

The most common type of stock is, as expected, the common stock. The common stock provides an ideal vehicle for most individuals, since anyone can participate – whether you are young, old, discriminating or easy-go-lucky. There is practically no restriction imposed against anyone who wants to buy a common stock.

Different types of stock

Sometimes, companies can opt to focus the voting privilege of a company to cover only a particular type of stock, limiting the majority of shares to only a select group of investors. As an example, a family business seeking to raise capital by selling equity might create a second type of a stock which they already control and has, for instance, 10 votes for each share, while they release to others another type of stock that allows only a single vote per share.

What happens from now on?

That is about all you need to know for now about the fundamental classes of investment options available to you. You can start impressing some of your friends and relatives about your newfound knowledge on stocks. Use the basic terminology as well as the essential principles of becoming a shareholder of a company to tell them how they can also join in the experience of investing. Most of all, tell them of the potential rewards you and they can expect from buying stocks while reminding them of the greater risks they will encounter compared to merely keeping their money in a bank. In the end, what you will decide to do with your new knowledge will be up to you.

Careconnect Health Insurance Group Review: Hay Fever by the Numbers

2 min read

Ah, spring! Warm breezes, chirping birds, blooming trees – and sniffling, congestion and all-around misery. Spring allergies, AKA hay fever, AKA allergic rhinitis, can last for weeks or even months, says Sherry Farzan, MD, an allergist at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. But paying attention to a few critical numbers may help you find a little relief.

2 weeks

If you experience symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and red, watery eyes for more than two weeks, it’s a good bet you have allergies, not a cold -- see your doctor. (On the other hand, a fever suggests that a cold is to blame.)

20 million

In the United States, nearly 20 million adults and more than 6 million children have hay fever. If you suffer in the springtime, you’re probably sensitive to pollen or mold spores. An allergist can do a skin or blood test to identify your individual triggers.

5 degrees

This past winter broke records in the United States, with temperatures averaging nearly 5 degrees above the 20th-century average. Warmer winters mean earlier, longer and more severe allergy seasons, experts say.

5 to 10 a.m.

Pollen levels are usually highest between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., so try to stay indoors during those hours, with the windows closed. If you have to go out, wear a hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from pollen, Farzan says.

3 to 4 days

An over-the-counter nasal decongestant can relieve stuffiness in a pinch, but if you use it for more than three or four days in a row, it can cause a rebound effect that makes your nose even more congested. If you need longer-term relief, an allergist can prescribe you something that won’t backfire.

90 percent

Allergy shots, also called immunotherapy, can reduce symptoms in 90 percent of people with seasonal allergies, Farzan says. You’ll need them weekly at first -- but eventually, once a month will do the trick.

Security and Risk Online: E-payments: Cyber-criminals put financial operators on their toes

5 min read

The challenge of fraud in electronic transactions remains one enduring source of concern for stakeholders in the financial sector. As the e-platforms grow, the potential risks equally skyrocket requiring a more proactive approach in nipping the trends in the bud.

This advancement has come with its challenges and risks as internet fraudsters took advantage of the technology loopholes to defraud unsuspecting customers of their hard earned money. Blocking these loopholes has been the major headache of stakeholders due to the growing e-payment channels and as transactions through such means grow.

According to the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement Scheme (NIBSS), the value of total transaction made on the two major electronic payment platforms of NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) stood at N35 trillion in the last three quarters of 2016, an equivalent of transaction value on all various electronic payment platforms in 2015.

In the last quarter of last year, the industry recorded N13.246 trillion transactions. While NEFT was N3.657 trillion, NIP recorded N9.589 trillion transactions.

Within the first two quarters last year, over 60 million units of transactions valued at N21.837 trillion were made on the two platforms according to report,

Combined with transaction value and volume on other platforms, which according to NIBSS, includes E-bills, mobile money and cheque transactions, it is obvious that the amount of money that daily exchanges hands electronically among individuals, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), multi-national companies and Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) is on the high side, hence, the rising trend of electronic fraud (e-fraud).

Also in 2013, NIBSS revealed that 822 cases of electronic fraud were recorded with an attempted value of N19.15 billion, while the actual loss to the online scam stood at N485.19 million.

Reported cases of fraud moved up by 78 per cent in 2014 to 1,461.  While attempted value reduced to N7.75 billion, the actual loss was N6.216 billion.

The trend, however, subsided in 2015 following efforts by stakeholders. In 2015, about 946 attempted e-fraud cases were recorded on the networks of banks, Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) and Mobile Payment Operators (MPOs), resulting in an approximated  loss of N5 billion, compared with N6.216 billion record of 2014.

Deputy Governor, Operations at the CBN, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu who was a special guest at a forum recalled that the NeFF had in the last five years proven to be a formidable stakeholder in securing this ecosystem, through a unique and critically important role of creating a platform for collaboration amongst stakeholders in payments system but more still needs to be done as the trend becomes more potent.

Adelabu who was represented by Mr. Taiwo Oladimeji, his Special Assistant, said, “The challenge of securing the Nigerian payments system will always be a daunting task, for with ease of payments, comes greater adoption, and with increased adoption, the lure of cyber-criminals who seek to convert either digital assets or resources or both to their own becomes greater.”

Mr. Dipo Fatokun, Chairman of NeFF and Director Banking and Payment System Department of the CBN explained the successes recorded so far by the forum and gave an overview of the plans for the New Year, among which is the organization of a workshop that would “highlight the challenges inherent in the Cyber-Crime Prohibition Act 2015 and its possible effect on e-commerce and use the recommendations to engage the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser on reviewing certain aspects that could affect the effective operationalization of the Act.”

He said efforts to establish a Dedicated e-Payment and Card Crime Unit in the Nigerian Police Force has gained momentum awaiting the approval of CBN’s Committee of Governors, expressing optimism that the unit would take shape in the coming year.

Fatokun however said a robust awareness programme for members of the public and staff of organizations that operate within the payments space would be carried out in 2017, saying, “It is important that our awareness programme starts in 2017 as this would help the industry reduce cost of fraud through increased vigilance and detection abilities”.

Stanbic IBTC Bank, FCMB, Citi Bank and the Standard Chartered Bank were co-sponsors of the dinner with their managing directors well represented at the forum. The bank stakeholders were unanimous in their pledge for more collaboration to effectively nip the trend of e-fraud in the bud and safeguard the integrity of online transactions.

According to the Chief Risk Officer of Stanbic, Mfon Akpan, 2016 has been a challenging year for bank. Worse still, she said, the industry continues to witness ingenuous activities of fraudsters. Though their activities have been frustrated to some extent, Akpan noted that more still needs to be done by stakeholders because “a porous banking industry will not engender trust in the public”

She also said the introduction of the Biometric Verification Number (BVN) has helped to reduce the extent of fraud but the industry is surrounded by powerful syndicates including insider threat. “We need to raise the bar, sharpen the saw, no need for complacency. We need collaboration among banks, telecommunication sector, internet service providers (ISPs) to identify the perpetrators with speed”, she said.

Soji Adeniyi, Chief Auditing Executive at FCMB also corroborated Akpan on the need for collaboration with Telcos and the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) to minimize the fraud. “We need constant forum to educate law enforcement agents and judicial officers among other players in the electronic payment system.

Providing insight into the electronic fraud challenge in the 21st Century banking system was the Head of Cyber Risk Services at Deloitte West Africa, Mr. Tope Aladenusi who spoke on “Disruptive Technology and the Future of Secure Payment”.

GAC EXPERTISE

Assistance to IRAS technical queries

More and more companies have seen their claims rejected or challenged by IRAS. It requires a specific expertise to claim technical staff salaries and outsourced R&D projects under the PIC scheme. We were expecting an increase of the controls, as it happened in other countries, with similar schemes. Make sure to secure your R&D tax credits by following all regulations and expectations from IRAS to avoid troubles and delays in the process.

R&D Tax Credits

From IRAS perspective, R&D includes the notion of innovation whereas it is excluded in OECD definition. Several countries use the OECD R&D definition for R&D tax credits, such as France, England or Canada. In Singapore, the definition of R&D is broader and therefore, the notion of eligible R&D activity of the PIC is larger than scientific research and is not limited to lab work and PhDs teams. Our consultants are R&D experts with either a MSc or a PhD who successfully claimed R&D projects in different fields such as Software Development, SaaS, Energy, E-commerce, Microsystem, Healthcare, Water, Big Data, Web technologies, etc.

GLOBAL NEWS
